Indrapramit Roy

Indrapramit Roy was born into a family steeped in the arts. His late father was associated with Bohuroopi, one of the premier theatre groups of Kolkata and his mother was an accomplished musician whose chosen instrument was the sitar.

Indrapramit studied print making at the Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan and, later, painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M S University, Baroda. He went on to take an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art, London, through an arts scholarship awarded by the Inlaks foundation.  This was followed by an Erasmus exchange grant that helped him spend a term each at Cite des Arts in Paris and the Hochschule der Kunst in Berlin.

He took a retreat for two years at the famed artists village of Cholamandal near Chennai in the 80s. It was here that he met one of the founders of Tara Books, a leading publisher of original books for children in India. This encounter made him want to try his hand at illustrating children’s books. The earliest publications from Tara Books carry illustrations from Indrapramit using warli techniques that make them really stand out on account of their captivating presence. They are appropriate for children, appealing to their rich and yet untamed imagination.

His paintings, on the other hand, are deeply psychological. They are a repository of memories, aspirations, dreams and desires that express a whole range of associative and, sometimes, even opposing meanings just like the counterpoints and contradictions of human nature.

In the span of an intense and luminous artistic career Indrapramit Roy has participated in over 80 Group shows, 17 solo shows and several art camps and workshops around the world and in reputed galleries. To the general public and the uninitiated, he Is known for a striking giant mural, measuring 12 x 26 feet, that he completed for Terminal-2 of the new Mumbai International Airport in 2013.

Indrapramit lives and works in Vadodara where he has been teaching painting at his alma mater since 1995.
