Manish Pushkale
A geologist by education, a philosopher by inclination, a painter by choice. This is an unlikely CV for any artist but it belongs to one of the most promising and respected of young artists in India today.

Hailing from Bhopal, Manish Pushkale holds a Master’s degree in Geology and has not attended an art school or institution of any kind. Perhaps this lack of formal training in art could be a reason for his talent to have flowered in unconventional ways, being nurtured instead by an innate sensitivity to his social and physical environments that find voice eventually in his art.

What intrigues many is how his training as a geologist has visibly influenced his work as an artist. It is evident in the organic textures he incorporates into his body of work along with an almost surreal choice of colors that are subtle and vivid equally. Manish is also a master technician going beyond conventional brush application of paints to engaging in an intuitive yet unique apply & wipe off technique executed in a way that leaves a lingering impression upon a viewer.

Critics say that his innovative techniques have evolved in unison with his choice and treatment of subjects to which they are amply suited. The world of opposites, of duality, is what fixes Manish’s attention most closely. The polarities of desire and restraint, asceticism and worldliness, presence and absence and life and death. After all this is the tangled web of existence that all of us mortals have to negotiate both out of anxiety and a need to understand. It is only fitting then that this becomes a subject for him to meditate upon and express in his own singular way.

Manish Pushkale has had several solo shows at premier art galleries across the country and is the recipient of numerous awards. He has participated in a great many group shows as well both in India and abroad.
