Vasundhra Tewari Broota is from a younger generation of female Indian painters who are calling attention to their work both for its novel aesthetics as well as the intellectual messages they seek to convey. Seen from a category perspective, her paintings can be considered figurative. The female nude is the basis for the exploration of larger ruminations around the status of women and the freedom they experience in contemporary society. In her own words “her paintings emerge from the process of perceiving women through a psycho-political lens and creating a pictorial context for the stories that arise therefrom”.

Vasundhra lives and works in New Delhi. She graduated from the University of Delhi with a major in literature and went on to study art at the famed Triveni Kala Sangam. She began her early forays into painting while working on a scholarship awarded by the Department of Culture of the Government of India in 1982.

The art world first took notice of her work for the subjects she chose, the unusual sensitivity with which they were portrayed and the peculiarity of her craft that employed mixed media in a striking manner. The central subject of her artistic contemplation and gaze was woman. It was expressed through moving nude forms that set out to explore and understand the nature of suppression that existed within prevailing societal structures. Visually striking as her paintings are on the surface, they also seek to reveal the inner world of her female subjects whose tensions she tries to mirror through the contrast offered between highly naturalistic figures and the bland pictorial spaces they occupy, using ‘strategic focus and tonal recessions’ to serve as highlights.  Whichever way it is perceived, her paintings are a celebration of the contemporary Indian woman portrayed as one who is unafraid to reveal her soul while daringly seeking to participate in the dynamics of everyday life without encumbrances.

Vasundhra exhibits widely both at home and internationally and has had numerous shows to her credit to date. She has won prestigious awards along the way and continues to participate in stimulating artists conclaves and workshops both in India and abroad.
